Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
However, some conservative pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few do not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain conservative figures to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy binders of materials that contained little previously unseen data.
